At Klasse für Alle, we are composting through learning-from and learning-with: humans, soils, gardens, the more-than human world.

If you want to share your skills around composting in a workshop, contact us at klassefueralle@uni-ak.ac.at

correspondent trans*mutations #1 brewing
Moving, layering, corresponding – with vibrant matter
date Saturday, October 11, 2025
time 2–5 pm
location Star room 8, Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz 2, University of Applied Arts (1010 Vienna)

In this first workshop of correspondent trans*mutations, we will get to know kombucha and its SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast) while corresponding. We will brew its tea and immerse the mothers*, while focusing on bodies (ours and others) that move in space and are being moved by it. Following scores inspired by a material and embodied approach, we will write and exchange letters with each other before leaving the SCOBYs and the kombucha to their layering, fermenting and transforming processes.

Wet and slimy transitions – Deuiller au travers

In this second workshop, we will collect the newly grown SCOBYs and prepare them for the drying process—a wet and slimy transition—while also writing and exchanging letters. This is a chance to say goodbye to the SCOBYs’ current form before it enters a new phase, where yeast and bacteria slowly enter dormancy, gradually fading over time.

The workshop’s timing mirrors this transformation: as the SCOBYs shift, so does the season, inviting reflection on endings, beginnings, and the space in between.

On the eve of November 1st, we practice “mourning in between” (Deuiler au travers, Emma Bigé), inspired by Saïmen, a Celtic pagan celebration marking the lives of the dead. This day honors the “weepers” (pleureuses) , those who live with the dead and mourn for them. It also signifies the onset of the dark winter period. The bear serves as our symbol of this passage: the bear that hibernates, that retreats into darkness, and that reminds us to honour the underground forces of our ancestors, whose quiet nourishment sustains the life of the coming year.

correspondent trans*mutations #3 harvesting
Composing, recomposing, decomposing – assemblages and mosaic
date Friday, November 14, 2025
time 2-5 pm
location Star room 8, Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz 2, University of Applied Arts (1010 Vienna)
with Momo E. Hontebeyrie
practicalities Limited capacities, please send an email to hontebeyrie.e@gmail.com to register. If you come for the first time please bring a glass jar! Please bring a pair of scissors as well.

In this last workshop, we meet again with the transformed SCOBYs (from wet and slimy matter to dry “bioleather”). Harvesting the words and the symbols we have shaped together, we look at the net of correspondences we have woven during the past workshops. We compose, recompose, and decompose the material by cutting pieces of the letters and assembling them on the dried SCOBYs, trans*mutating the letters and creating a large mosaic.
